Introduction

Although Romani may be described as a heterogeneous cluster of varieties without any homogenising standard, all of theses varieties have certain structural features in common which may be labelled as the core of Romani. This core pertains to the lexicon as well as morphology. Syntax and phonology – or phonetics, to be precise – of the individual varieties for the most part have adopted or assimilated to the structures of the primary contact language(s), those are, the language(s) spoken by the majority population(s) of the respective "host country". This development results from multilingualism of all Roma groups which is to some extent a consequence of the permanent pressure of assimilation on the part of the respective majority population, which has been affecting the Roma groups for centuries.
